Man Fined $200 for Driving on Busy Vietnamese Beach

A 40-year-old man has been fined VND5 million (US$200) and had two points deducted from his driver's license after driving his car into a restricted beach area in central Vietnam.

The Dak Lak Provincial Traffic Police Department issued the penalty last Friday.

The incident occurred the previous afternoon when the man drove a seven-seat vehicle onto a beach in Binh Kien Ward, formerly part of Phu Yen Province, where many locals and tourists were swimming and relaxing.

The car became stuck in the sand and had to be pulled out by a specialized vehicle.

According to regulations, all types of cars are prohibited from driving on the beach due to the danger they pose to other people.

Earlier, on June 3, a 44-year-old man in the province was put under investigation, facing charges of disturbing public order, after allegedly driving a pickup truck across a crowded beach, alarming beach-goers and sparking public outrage.

Under Vietnam's current traffic regulations, each driver's license starts with 12 points. Losing all 12 results in a driving ban, and offenders must wait at least six months before retaking the driving test.
